حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ح حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَا ثنا زُهَيْرٌ ثنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ يَقُولُ
كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ أَصَابَ النَّاسُ فِيهِ شِدَّةٌ فَقَالَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ لِأَصْحَابِهِ {لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} مِنْ حَوْلِهِ وَقَالَ {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ فَسَأَلَهُ فَاجْتَهَدَ بِيَمِينِهِ فَقَالَ كَذَبَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مِمَّا قَالُوا شِدَّةٌ حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَصْدِيقِي فِي {إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ} «فَدَعَاهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَيَسْتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ فَلَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ» وَقَوْلُهُ {كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُسَنَّدَةٌ} قَالَ «كَانُوا رِجَالًا أَجْمَلَ شَيْءٍ»

✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey in which the people suffered hardship. 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy said to his companions, {Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disperse} from around him. And he said, {If we return to Madinah, the more honored will surely expel the more humble from it}. So I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him. He sent for 'Abd Allah and questioned him, and he swore emphatically, saying, 'He lied, O Messenger of God.' Then what they said weighed heavily on me, until God sent down my vindication in {When the hypocrites come to you}. 'The Prophet ﷺ called them to seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away.' And His saying, {As if they were propped-up timbers}. He said, 'They were the most handsome of men.'
