حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ثنا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ السَّبَّاقِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ

أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مَقْتَلَ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ فَإِذَا عُمَرُ جَالِسٌ عَنْدَهُ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّ عُمَرَ جَاءَنِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْقَتْلَ قَدِ اسْتَحَرَّ بِأَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ بِقُرَّاءِ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَكَيْفَ أَفْعَلُ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُرَاجِعُنِي فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ صَدْرَ عُمَرَ وَرَأَيْتُ فِي ذَلِكَ الَّذِي رَأَى عُمَرُ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لِزَيْدٍ إِنَّكَ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ عَاقِلٌ لَا نَتَّهِمُكَ قَدْ كُنْتَ تُكْتَبُ الْوَحْيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَتَبَّعِ الْقُرْآنَ فَاجْمَعْهُ قَالَ زَيْدٌ «فَوَاللهِ لَوْ كَلَّفُونِي نَقْلَ جَبَلٍ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ مَا كَانَ أَثْقَلَ مِمَّا أَمَرَنِي بِهِ مِنْ جَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ» قَالَ قُلْتُ وَكَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ بِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُرَاجِعُنِي حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَ فَتَتَبَّعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ أَجْمَعُهُ مِنَ الرِّقَاعِ وَالْعُسُبِ وَصُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ آخِرَ سُورَةِ التَّوْبَةِ مَعَ خُزَيْمَةَ أَوْ أَبِي خُزَيْمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ لَمْ أَجِدْهَا مَعَ أَحَدٍ غَيْرِهِ {لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ} حَتَّى خَاتِمَةِ بَرَاءَةَ «وَكَانَتِ الصُّحُفُ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حَيَاتَهُ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ»

✧ Abu Bakr sent for me after the killing of the people of al-Yamama. I found Umar sitting with him. Abu Bakr said: “Umar came to me and said: ‘Killing has intensified among the people of al-Yamama among the Quran reciters.’” I said: “How can I do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?” Umar said: “By Allah, it is good.” He kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to that to which He had opened Umar's chest, and I saw in that what Umar saw. Abu Bakr said to Zayd: “You are a young, intelligent man, and we do not accuse you. You used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So pursue the Quran and compile it.” Zayd said: “By Allah, if they had tasked me with moving a mountain, it would not have been heavier than what he ordered me to do of compiling the Quran.” He said: I said: “How can you do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?” He said: “By Allah, it is good.” Abu Bakr kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to that to which He had opened Abu Bakr's chest. He said: So I pursued the Quran, compiling it from palm stalks, date-palm branches, and the memories of men, until I found the last part of Surah al-Tawbah with Khuzaymah or Abu Khuzaymah al-Ansari, not finding it with anyone else: “There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves,” until the end of Bara'ah. The sheets remained with Abu Bakr until Allah took him, then with Umar during his life until Allah took him, then with Hafsah bt. Umar.
