حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجَوَارِيُّ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَخْرَمَ ثنا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

«لَيْسَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ بِالْيَوْمِ الَّذِي يَقُولُهُ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ تُسْتَرُ فِيهِ الْكَعْبَةُ وتَقْلِسُ فِيهِ الْحَبَشَةُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ يَدُورُ فِي السَّنَةِ فَكَانَ النَّاسُ يَأْتُونَ فُلَانًا الْيَهُودِيَّ فَيَسْأَلُونَهُ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ الْيَهُودِيُّ أَتَوْا زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ فَسَأَلُوهُ»

✧ “The day of Ashura’ is not the day that people speak of. It was only the day on which the Kaaba used to be covered and the Abyssinians used to play in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it used to rotate through the year. People used to go to such-and-such a Jew and ask him. When the Jew died, they came to Zayd b. Thabit and asked him.”
