✧ Some people say: “Allah has decreed everything except deeds.” He (the narrator) said: By Allah, I never saw Sa'id b. al-Musayyab become so intensely angry that he was about to stand up; then he calmed down and said: They have uttered it. By Allah, I heard a hadith about them that suffices them as evil. Woe to them! Do they not know? I said, “May Allah have mercy on you, Abu Muhammad, what is it?” He looked at me after some of his anger had subsided and said: Rafi' b. Khadij narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “There will be a people among my community who disbelieve in Allah and the Quran while they are unaware, just as the Jews and Christians disbelieved.” I said, “May I be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, how is that?” He said, “They affirm part of the decree and disbelieve in part of it.” I said, “Then what do they say?” He said, “They say good is from Allah and evil is from Iblis, thus affirming the Book of Allah upon that and disbelieving in the Quran after faith and recognition. What enmity, hatred, and disputation my community will encounter from them! Those are the heretics of this community in their time. There will be oppression from the ruler, and they will suffer oppression, injustice, and favouritism. Then Allah ﷻ will send a plague that destroys most of them. Then there will be a sinking [of the earth], and how few of them will escape! The believer on that day will have little joy and intense grief. Then there will be transformation, and Allah ﷻ will transform most of those into apes and pigs. Then the Dajjal will come forth soon after that.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept until we wept because of his weeping. We said, “What makes you weep?” He said, “Out of mercy for the distress of the wretched, for among them is the devoted worshipper and among them is the one who strives hard, even though they are not the first to have preceded to this saying and found its burden too heavy. Indeed most of those who perished among the Children of Israel did so by denying the decree.” I said, “May I be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, tell me how is faith in the decree?” He said, “You believe in Allah alone, and that no one alongside Him possesses any harm or benefit; you believe in Paradise and Hell; and you know that Allah ﷻ created them both before the creation of creatures. Then He created His creatures and made of them whomever He willed for Paradise and whomever He willed for Hell as justice from Him. Each one works for what has been determined for him and is heading to what has been determined for him.” I said, “Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.”
