✧ I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, while the Prophet ﷺ looked at the Angel of Death ﷺ at the head of a man from the Ansar: “O Angel of Death, be gentle with my companion, for he is a believer.” The Angel of Death ﷺ said: “Be of good heart and cool of eye, and know that I am gentle with every believer. And know, O Muhammad, that I seize the soul of the son of Adam, and when a crier from his family cries out, I stand in the house with his soul and say, ‘What is this crier? By God, we have not wronged him, nor have we preceded his term, nor have we hastened his decree. We have no sin in seizing him. If you are content with what God has done, you will be rewarded; but if you grieve and are displeased, you will sin and be burdened. You have no claim against us, and we still have a return to you, and then another return, so beware. There is no household, O Muhammad, of hair or clay, land or sea, plain or mountain, but I examine them every day and night, until I know their young and old better than they know themselves. By God, O Muhammad, if I wanted to seize the soul of a mosquito, I could not do so until God Himself permits its seizure.’” Ja‘far said: “It has reached me that he examines them only at the times of prayer. When he looks at the time of death, whoever was diligent in the prayers, the angel draws near to him, drives away Satan from him, and prompts him with ‘There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God.’ And that is the tremendous state.”
