✧ We encamped with the Messenger of God ﷺ at Marr al-Zahran. He said: I came out of my tent, and there I saw some women conversing. They pleased me, so I returned, took out my bag, and from it took out a fine garment and put it on. Then I came and sat with them. The Messenger of God ﷺ came out of his dome and said: "Abu 'Abd Allah, what makes you sit with them?" When I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ, I was awed and confused. I said: "O Messenger of God, a camel of mine has strayed, and I am looking for a hobble for it." He went on, and I followed him. He threw his cloak to me and entered the arak trees. It is as if I am looking at the whiteness of his back against the greenness of the arak. He relieved himself, performed ablution, and came back while water was flowing from his beard onto his chest—or he said dripping from his beard onto his chest. He said: "Abu 'Abd Allah, what happened to the straying of your camel?" Then we set off, and he would not catch up with me on the journey except to say: "Peace be upon you, Abu 'Abd Allah, what happened to the straying of that camel?" When I saw that, I hurried to Madinah and avoided the mosque and sitting with the Prophet ﷺ. When that went on for a long time, I looked for a time when the mosque was empty, so I went to the mosque and stood praying. The Messenger of God ﷺ came out suddenly from one of his rooms and prayed two brief rak'as. I prolonged my prayer hoping he would leave and let me be. He said: "Prolong as much as you wish, Abu 'Abd Allah, for I will not stand until you finish." I said to myself: By God, I will apologize to the Messenger of God ﷺ and clear his heart. When he said: "Peace be upon you, Abu 'Abd Allah, what happened to the straying of that camel?" I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, that camel has not strayed since I became a Muslim." He said: "May God have mercy on you" three times. Then he did not return to any of what had been.
