حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ثنا أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى وَالنَّاسُ حَوْلَهُ صَلَّى صَلَاةً خَفِيفَةً تَامَّةَ الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ فَجَلَسَ يَوْمًا فَأَطَالَ الْجُلُوسَ حَتَّى أَوْمَأَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ أَنِ اسْكُتُوا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُوحَى إِلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَطَلْتَ الْجُلُوسَ حَتَّى أَوْمَأَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ أَنَّهُ يُنَزَّلُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ «لَا وَلَكِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ رَغْبَةٍ وَرَهْبَةٍ سَأَلْتُ اللهَ فِيهَا ثَلَاثًا فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُعَذِّبَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍ عُذِّبَ بِهِ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلِّطَ عَلَى عَامَّتِكُمْ عَدُوًّا يَسْتَبِيحُهَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ فَمَنَعَنِيهَا» قُلْتُ لَهُ أَبُوكَ سَمِعَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ سَمِعَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَدَدَ أَصَابِعِي هَذِهِ الْعَشْرِ الْأَصَابِعِ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he prayed while people were around him, prayed a light prayer but complete in bowing and prostration. Then one day he sat and prolonged the sitting until some of us gestured to others, “Be quiet, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is receiving revelation.” When he finished, some of the people said, “O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged the sitting until some of us gestured to others that revelation was coming down to you.” He said, “No, but it was a prayer of hope and fear. I asked Allah in it for three things, and He gave me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to punish you with a punishment with which those before you were punished, and I asked Him not to give an enemy power over your common people to violate them, and He granted these to me. And I asked Him not to make you into factions and make some of you taste the violence of others, but He withheld it from me.” I said to him, “Did your father hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said, “Yes, I heard him say that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the number of my fingers—these ten fingers.”
