✧ Whenever our food was ready, we would send for Abu Ayyub and the people of his ship. Abu Ayyub came and said, "You invited me while I was fasting, but it was my duty to answer you. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'A Muslim has six obligatory rights over his fellow Muslim. Whoever abandons one of them has abandoned an obligatory right owed to his brother: to answer him when he calls him, to greet him when he meets him, to respond to his sneeze, to visit him when he falls ill, to follow his funeral procession when he dies, and to give him sincere counsel when he seeks his advice.'" My father said: There was among us a man who was a joker, and a man was in charge of our expenses. The joker would say to the one in charge of the food, "May God reward you with good and righteousness." When he repeated that many times, the man began to get angry and insult him. The joker said, "O Abu Ayyub, what do you think of a man who, when I say to him, 'May God reward you with good and righteousness,' gets angry and insults me?" Abu Ayyub said, "We used to say: Whoever good does not reform, evil will reform." So it was turned around for him. When the man came, the joker said to him, "May God reward you with evil and hardship." The man laughed and was pleased, and he said, "You never abandon your nonsense in any state." The joker said, "May God reward Abu Ayyub with good and righteousness, for he told me."
