حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ التَّمَّارُ وَأَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ خَبَّابٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ قَيْنًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَعَمِلْتُ لِلْعَاصِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ سَيْفًا فَجِئْتُ أَتَقَاضَاهُ فَقَالَ

لَا أُعْطِيكَ حَتَّى تَكْفُرَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ فَقُلْتُ لَا أَكْفُرُ بِمُحَمَّدٍ حَتَّى يُمِيتَكَ اللهُ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ « {أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ بِآيَاتِنَا وَقَالَ لَأُوتَيَنَّ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا أَطَّلَعَ الْغَيْبَ أَمِ اتَّخَذَ عِنْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ عَهْدًا} » قَالَ مُوَثَّقًا

Translation

✧ He said, "I will not give you until you disbelieve in Muhammad." I said, "I will not disbelieve in Muhammad until Allah causes you to die." Then I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Allah ﷻ sent down: {Have you seen the one who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children"? Has he looked into the unseen or taken a covenant with the Most Merciful?} He said, "A binding covenant."
