حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَبَّابِ بْنِ الْأَرَتِّ أَنَّ خَبَّابًا قَالَ
رَمَقْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي صَلَاةٍ صَلَّاهَا حَتَّى كَانَ مَعَ الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ قَامَ خَبَّابٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي لَقَدْ صَلَّيْتَ اللَّيْلَةَ صَلَاةً مَا رَأَيْتُكَ صَلَّيْتَ نَحْوَهَا؟ قَالَ «أَجَلْ إِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ رَغَبٍ وَرَهَبٍ سَأَلْتُ فِيهَا رَبِّي ﷻ ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُهْلِكَنَا بِمَا أَهْلَكَ بِهِ الْأُمَمَ قَبْلَنَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُظْهِرَ عَلَيْنَا عَدُوًّا مِنْ غَيْرِهِمْ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَنَا شِيَعًا فَمَنَعَنِيهَا»

✧ I watched the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a prayer he performed until it was near dawn. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, Khabbab stood and said, "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom, tonight you prayed a prayer the like of which I have not seen you pray?" He replied, "Yes, indeed, it was a prayer of hope and fear. In it I asked my Lord ﷻ for three things, and He gave me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy us with what He destroyed the nations before us, and He granted them to me. I asked Him not to let an enemy from other than them prevail over us, and He granted them to me. I asked Him not to make us into factions, and He withheld it from me."
