حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ قَالَ بَعَثَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ لِيُبَايِعَ لِابْنِهِ يَزِيدَ فَقَالَ

رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ مَا يَحْبِسُكَ؟ قَالَ حَتَّى يَجِيءَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ فَيُبَايِعَ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْبَلُ أَهْلِ الْبَلَدِ فَإِذَا بَايَعَ النَّاسَ بَايَعَ النَّاسُ

✧ A man from Syria said, "What is holding you back?" He said, "Until Sa'id b. Zayd comes and gives allegiance, for he is the most noble of the people of the land. When he gives allegiance to the people, the people give allegiance."
