حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْقَزَّازُ الْبَصْرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ الْكَرْمَانِيُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ ثنا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ أَنَّ أَبَا الطُّفَيْلِ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ يَقُولُ الشَّقِيُّ مَنْ شَقِيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ وَالسَّعِيدُ مَنْ وُعِظَ بِغَيْرِهِ فَخَرَجْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ أَتَعَجَّبُ مِمَّا سَمِعْتُ حَتَّى دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي سَرِيحَةَ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ أُسَيْدٍ الْغِفَارِيِّ فَتَعَجَّبْتُ فَقَالَ مِمَّ تَعَجَّبْتَ؟ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتُ أَخَاكَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَزْعُمُ

أَنَّ الشَّقِيَّ مَنْ شَقِيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ وَأَنَّ السَّعِيدَ مَنْ وُعِظَ لِغَيْرِهِ فَقَالَ مِنْ أَيِّ ذَلِكَ عَجِبْتَ؟ قُلْتُ أَيَشْقَى أَحَدٌ بِغَيْرِ عَمَلٍ؟ فَأَهْوَى بِيَدَيِهِ إِلَى أُذُنَيْهِ وَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِأُذُنَيَّ هَاتَيْنِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ تَقَعُ النُّطْفَةُ فِي الرَّحِمِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ يَتَصَوَّرُ عَلَيْهَا الْمَلَكُ حَسِبْتُهُ قَالَ الَّذِي يَخْلُقَهَا فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ أَذَكَرٌ أَمْ أُنْثَى؟ فَيَجْعَلُهَا ذَكَرًا أَوْ أُنْثَى فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ أَسَوِيٌّ أَمْ غَيْرُ سَوِيٍّ؟ فَيَجْعَلُهُ اللهُ ﷻ سَوِيًّا أَوْ غَيْرَ سَوِيٍّ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ مَا أَجَلُهُ؟ مَا خَلْقُهُ؟ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ أَشَقِيٌّ أَمْ سَعِيدٌ؟ فَيَجْعَلُهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى شَقِيًّا أَوْ سَعِيدًا

✧ That the wretched one is he who was wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who is admonished by another. So he said, 'Which of that do you find strange?' I said, 'Can anyone become wretched without a deed?' He moved his hands to his ears and said, 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ with these two ears saying: The drop (nutfah) falls into the womb for forty nights, then the angel forms it—I think he said the one who creates it—and says: O Lord, male or female? So He makes it male or female. Then he says: O Lord, sound or unsound? So God ﷻ makes it sound or unsound. Then he says: O Lord, what is its term? What is its character? Then he says: O Lord, wretched or fortunate? So God, exalted is He, makes it wretched or fortunate.'
