حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي يَزِيدَ رَأَيْتَ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

نَعَمْ رَأَيْتُهُ جَالِسًا فِي حَوْضِ زَمْزَمَ قُلْتُ هَلْ رَأَيْتَهُ صَبَغَ قَالَ «لَا إِلَّا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُهُ وَلِحْيَتُهُ سَوْدَاءُ إِلَى هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ يَعْنِي عَنْفَقَتَهُ وَأَسْفَلُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ بَيَاضٌ وَذَكَرَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ شَابَ ذَلِكَ الْمَوْضِعُ مِنْهُ وَكَانَ يَتَشَبَّهُ بِهِ»

✧ Yes, I saw him sitting at the well of Zamzam. I said: Did you see him dye (his hair)? He said, 'No, except that I saw him and his beard was black up to this place, meaning his 'anfaqa (the hair below the lower lip), and below that there was whiteness. And he mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ had gray hairs in that place, and he used to imitate him.'
