✧ I heard my father say: Three days before the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Gabriel ﷺ descended upon him and said: O Muhammad, Allah, Majestic is He, sent me to you as an honor for you, a distinction for you, and specifically for you, to ask you what He knows better than you. He says: How do you find yourself? The Prophet ﷺ said: “I find myself, O Gabriel, distressed, and I find myself, O Gabriel, grieved.” He said: Then on the third day, Gabriel ﷺ descended, and the Angel of Death (peace be upon them) descended, and with them descended an angel in the air called Isma'il, over seventy thousand angels, and there was not an angel among them except that he was over seventy thousand angels, with Gabriel ﷺ accompanying them. Then he said: O Muhammad, Allah, Majestic is He, sent me to you as an honor for you, a distinction for you, and specifically for you, to ask you what He knows better than you. He says: How do you find yourself? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I find myself, O Gabriel, distressed, and I find myself, O Gabriel, grieved.” He said: Then the Angel of Death ﷺ asked permission at the door. Gabriel ﷺ said: O Muhammad, this is the Angel of Death asking permission to enter upon you. He has never asked permission from any human before you, nor will he ask permission from any human after you. He said: Give him permission. So Gabriel ﷺ gave him permission, and he came forward until he stood before him. He said: O Muhammad, Allah, Majestic is He, sent me to you and commanded me to obey you in whatever you command me. If you command me to take your soul, I will take it, and if you dislike it, I will leave it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Will you do so, O Angel of Death?” He said: Yes, and with that I have been commanded, to obey you in whatever you command me. Then Gabriel ﷺ said to him: Allah, Majestic is He, has longed to meet you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Proceed with what you have been commanded.” Gabriel said to him: This is the last time I will set foot on the earth; my need was only in this world. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died and condolences came, someone came whose voice they heard but whose person they did not see. He said: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Every soul will taste death. In Allah there is consolation for every affliction, a replacement for every loss, and a compensation for everything missed. So in Allah put your trust, and on Him place your hope, for the truly afflicted is the one deprived of reward. And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
