حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي سُمَينَةَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ شَيْبَانَ بْنِ مَخْرَمٍ وَكَانَ عُثْمَانِيًّا قَالَ

إِنِّي لَمَعَ عَلِيٍّ ؓ إِذْ أَتَى كَرْبَلَاءَ فَقَالَ «يُقْتَلُ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ شُهَدَاءُ لَيْسَ مِثْلَهُمْ شُهَدَاءُ إِلَّا شُهَدَاءُ بَدْرٍ» فَقُلْتُ بَعْضُ كِذْبَاتِهِ وَثَمَّ رِجْلُ حِمَارٍ مَيِّتٍ فَقُلْتُ لِغُلَامي خُذْ رِجْلَ هَذَا الْحِمَارِ فَأَوْتِدْهَا فِي مَقْعَدِهِ وَغَيِّبْهَا فَضَرَبَ الدَّهْرُ ضَرْبَةً فَلَمَّا قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ؓ انْطَلَقْتُ وَمَعِي أَصْحَابٌ لِي فَإِذَا جُثَّةُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ؓ عَلَى رِجْلِ ذَاكَ الْحِمَارِ وَإِذَا أَصْحَابُهُ رِبْضَةٌ حَوْلَهُ

✧ I was with Ali ؓ when he came to Karbala and said, “Martyrs will be killed in this place, whose like are no martyrs except the martyrs of Badr.” I said, “This is one of his lies,” while there was the leg of a dead donkey. I told my servant, “Take this donkey’s leg and peg it into his seat and conceal it.” Time passed, and when al-Husayn b. Ali ؓ was killed, I set out with some companions of mine, and there was the body of al-Husayn b. Ali ؓ upon the leg of that donkey, with his companions lying slain around him.
