حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَقِيلٍ أَنَسُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ ثنا أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ عَمْرُو بْنُ هِشَامٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطَّرَائِفِيُّ عَنِ الْوَازِعِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أُمِّ الْوَلِيدِ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ قَالَتْ

اطَّلَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ عَشِيَّةٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَمَا تَسْتَحْيُونَ؟ قَالُوا مِمَّ ذَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ تَجْمَعُونَ مَا لَا تَأْكُلُونَ وَتَبْنُونَ مَا لَا تَعْمُرُونَ وَتَأْمُلُونَ مَا لَا تُدْرِكُونَ أَلَا تَسْتَحْيُونَ ذَلِكَ؟

Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ looked out one evening and said, "O people, are you not ashamed?" They said, "Of what, O Messenger of God?" He said, "You gather what you do not eat, build what you do not inhabit, and hope for what you do not attain. Are you not ashamed of that?"
