✧ The Mother of Roman, the Woman of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ أُمَّ رُومَانَ وَهِيَ أُمُّ عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَنْ أَمْرِ عَائِشَةَ إِذِ قِيلَ لَهَا مَا قِيلَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عُذْرَهَا فَقَالَتْ قَالَتْ أُمُّ مِسْطَحٍ فَعَلَ اللهُ بِمِسْطَحٍ وَفَعَلَ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ لِمَ؟ قَالَتْ لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ فِيمَنْ يُحَدِّثُ الْحَدِيثَ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ وَأَيُّ حَدِيثِهِ؟ فَأَخْبَرَتْهَا قَالَتْ «سَمِعَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَخَرَّتْ مَغْشِيًّا عَلَيْهَا فَمَا أَفَاقَتْ إِلَّا وَعَلَيْهَا حُمَّى نَافِضٍ قَالَتْ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا لِهَذِهِ؟ قَالَتْ فَقُلْنَا حُمَّى أَخَذْتَهَا قَالَ فَلَعَلَّهُ مِنْ أَجَلِّ حَدِيثٍ تُحَدِّثُ بِهِ قَالَتْ فَقَعَدَتْ وَقَالَتْ وَاللهِ لَئِنْ حَلَفْتُ لَا تُصَدِّقُونِي وَإِنِ اعْتَذَرْتُ لَا تَعْذِرُونِي فَمَثَلِي وَمَثَلُكُمْ مَثَلُ يَعْقُوبَ وَبَنِيهِ وَاللهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَى مَا تَصِفُونَ قَالَتْ وَانْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ مَا أَنْزَلَ فَأَتَاهَا فَأَخْبَرَهَا فَقَالَتْ بِحَمْدِ اللهِ لَا بِحَمْدِ أَحَدٍ

✧ I asked Umm Rūmān, who is the mother of ʿĀʾisha, the Mother of the Believers, about the affair of ʿĀʾisha when what was said to her was said, and Allah sent down her vindication. She said: The mother of Misṭaḥ said: May Allah do to Misṭaḥ and did. ʿĀʾisha said: Why? She said: Because he was among those who spread the talk. ʿĀʾisha said: And what talk of his? She informed her. She said: Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr hear it? She said: Yes. She fell down unconscious, and she did not recover except with a violent fever. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said: What is wrong with her? She said: We said: A fever has seized her. He said: Perhaps it is because of the talk that is being circulated. She said: She sat up and said: By Allah, if I swear, you will not believe me, and if I offer an excuse, you will not excuse me. My example and yours is like Yaʿqūb and his sons. And Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left, and Allah, may He be exalted, sent down what He sent down. He came to her and informed her, and she said: By the praise of Allah, not by the praise of anyone.
