✧ From Ikrimah and Abu Yazid al-Madini, or one of them (Abd al-Razzaq was uncertain), that Asma' bint Umays said: When Fatimah was sent to Ali b. Abi Talib, we found nothing in his house except spread sand, a pillow stuffed with something, a water jar, and a mug. The Prophet ﷺ sent word to Ali: "Do not initiate anything," or he said, "Do not approach your wife until I come to you." Then the Prophet ﷺ came and said, "Is my brother there?" Umm Ayman, who was the mother of Usamah b. Zayd, a Habashi woman and a righteous woman, said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is your brother and you have married your daughter to him." The Prophet ﷺ had established brotherhood among his companions and had made Ali his own brother. He said, "That is so, O Umm Ayman." She said: Then the Prophet ﷺ asked for a vessel containing water and said over it whatever Allah willed him to say. Then he wiped Ali's chest and face with it. Then he called Fatimah, and she came to him, stumbling in her cloak from shyness. He sprinkled some of that water on her and said to her whatever Allah willed him to say. Then he said to her, "I have not failed you; I have married you to the most beloved of my family to me." Then he saw a dark figure behind the curtain or behind the door and said, "Who is this?" She said, "Asma'." He said, "Asma' bint Umays?" She said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Did you come as a favor to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his daughter?" She said, "Yes. On the night a young woman is married, she must have a woman near her in case a need arises, she can tell her about it." She said: Then he supplicated for me with a supplication that is indeed the most reliable of my deeds in my view. Then he said to Ali, "Take your wife." Then he left and departed. She said: He kept supplicating for both of them until he disappeared into his chamber.
