حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا أَبِي ثنا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ قَالَ
كَتَبْتُ إِلَى نَافِعٍ أَسْأَلُهُ هَلْ كَانَتِ الدَّعْوَةُ قَبْلَ الْقِتَالِ؟ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ فِي أَوَّلِ الْإِسْلَامِ «وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَغَارَ عَلَى بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ وَهُمْ غَارُونَ وَنَعَمِهِمْ تُسْقَى فَقَتَلَ مُقَاتِلَهُمْ وَسَبَى سَبْيَهُمْ فَأَصَابَ جُوَيْرِيَةَ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ» حَدَّثَنِي بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَكَانَ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي ذَلِكَ الْجَيْشِ
Translation

✧ I wrote to Nāfiʿ asking him whether the call to Islam preceded fighting. He wrote back to me that that was at the beginning of Islam, and that the Messenger of God ﷺ raided Banū al-Muṣṭaliq while they were heedless and their cattle were being watered. He killed their fighting men, took their women and children captive, and Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith fell to him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, who was in that army on that day, narrated this hadith to me.
