✧ All of them narrated to me a portion of her hadith, and some were more retentive than others and more accurate in narrating. I have memorized from each man among them the hadith he narrated to me, and some of their hadith confirms others. They claimed that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to go out on a journey, he drew lots among his wives, and whichever of them came out in the lot, he took her with him. She said: He drew lots among us for an expedition he undertook, and my lot came out, so I went out with him after the hijab had been revealed. I was carried in a howdah and descended in it. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished that expedition and returned, and we approached Madinah, he announced departure one night. I got up when they announced departure and walked until I had passed beyond the army. When I had finished my business, I came back to the baggage and felt my chest, and found that a necklace of mine made of onyx beads had broken. So I went back searching for my necklace, and its search detained me. The people who were loading my camel came and carried my howdah and placed it on my camel that I rode, thinking I was inside. At that time women were light; they had not become heavy and flesh had not covered them, and they ate only small amounts of food. So they carried it, and I was a young girl. They sent the camel off and departed. I found my necklace after the army had moved on, and I came to their campsite, but there was no one in it. I headed to my place where I had been, and I thought that they would miss me and return to me. While I was sitting at my place, sleep overcame my eyes. Safwan b. al-Mu‘attal al-Sulami, then al-Dhakwani, was behind the army. He reached my place in the morning and saw the dark shape of a sleeping person. He came to me, and he used to see me before the hijab. I woke up at his utterance of recovery when he made his mount kneel and stepped on its foreleg, and I mounted it. He led me on the mount until we reached the army after they had halted, resting at noon. Then those who were destroyed were destroyed. The one who assumed the greater part of the slander was Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul. I arrived in Madinah and fell ill there for a month, while the people were spreading the words of the slanderers, and I was unaware of any of that. But it troubled me in my illness that I did not recognize from the Messenger of Allah the kindness I used to see from him when I was sick. He would only enter, greet, and say, “How is this one?” Then he would leave. That troubled me, and I remained unaware until I recovered. I went out with Umm Mistah toward al-Manasi‘, our place for relieving ourselves. We would not go out except from night to night, and that was before privies were made near our houses. Our practice was the practice of the early Arabs in the open desert. I and Umm Mistah, daughter of Abu Ruhm, were walking when she tripped over her long outer garment and said, “May Mistah perish.” I said to her, “How bad what you said! Do you revile a man who witnessed Badr?” She said, “O you, have you not heard what they said?” I said, “What did they say?” She told me the words of the slanderers, and I became more ill in addition to my illness. When I returned to my house, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me and said, “How is this one?” I said, “Permit me to go to my parents.” At that time I wanted to confirm the news from them. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted me, so I went to my parents and said to my mother, “What are the people talking about?” She said, “O daughter, take the matter lightly. By Allah, rarely is there a beautiful woman loved by a man who has co-wives except that they say much against her.” I said, “Glory be to Allah! The people have been talking about this?” She said: I spent that night until morning with tears not ceasing and no sleep soothing my eyes. Then I woke up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ali b. Abi Talib and Usama b. Zayd when the revelation was delayed, to consult them about separating from his wife. As for Usama, he advised the Messenger of Allah ﷺ based on what he knew of his wife’s innocence and the affection he felt for them. Usama said, “She is your wife, O Messenger of Allah, and we know nothing but good.” As for Ali, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has not restricted you; there are many women besides her. Ask the servant girl, and she will tell you the truth.” She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Barira and said to her, “Have you seen anything from her that makes you suspicious?” Barira said, “No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have not seen anything about her that I would hold against her, except that she is a young girl who sleeps off from the dough until a domestic animal comes and eats it.” She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood that day and sought excuse against Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who will excuse me from a man whose harm has reached me concerning my family? By Allah,” he said it three times, “I know nothing but good about my family, and they have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he used to enter upon my family only with me.” She said: Sa‘d b. Mu‘adh stood and said, “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, we will strike his neck; and if he is from our brothers the Khazraj, command us and we will do your command.” Sa‘d b. Ubada stood, who was the chief of the Khazraj and had been a righteous man before, but zeal carried him away. He said, “You lie! By the life of Allah, you will not kill him, nor can you do that.” Usayd b. Hudayr said, “You lie! By the life of Allah, he will kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites.” The two tribes Aws and Khazraj rose up until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing on the pulpit. He came down to calm them until they became silent, and he became silent. I wept all day with tears not ceasing and no sleep soothing my eyes. My parents came to me in the morning, and I had wept through my day and night until I thought that weeping would split my eye. While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, a woman from the Ansar asked permission to enter, and I permitted her. She sat weeping with me. While we were like that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and sat down. He had not sat with me since the accusation was made. He had stayed a month without receiving revelation concerning my matter. He testified and then said, “To proceed, O Aisha, it has reached me about you such and such. If you are innocent, Allah will soon prove your innocence; but if you have committed a sin, seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant confesses a sin and then repents, Allah turns to him.” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his speech, my tears stopped until I could not feel a drop. I said to my father, “Respond to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what he said.” He said, “By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I said to my mother, and she said the same. I said, while I was a young girl who did not read much of the Quran, “By Allah, I know that you have heard what has been said, and it has settled in your hearts and you have believed it. So if I tell you that I am innocent, and Allah knows I am innocent, you will not believe me. And if I confess to you something, and Allah knows I am innocent of it, you will believe me. By Allah, I find no example for me and you except the father of Yusuf when he said: ‘Patience is most fitting…’” She said: Then I turned on my bed, hoping that Allah would prove my innocence. But by Allah, I did not think that revelation would be sent down concerning my matter that would be recited, for I was too insignificant in my view for the Quran to speak about my matter. But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would see a dream that would prove my innocence. She said: By Allah, he did not leave his seat, and no one left the house, until revelation came down upon him. He was seized by what used to seize him of the intense condition, until sweat like pearls poured from him on a cold day. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was relieved, and he was laughing. The first word he spoke was, “O Aisha, praise Allah, for Allah has declared you innocent.” My mother said to me, “Get up to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I said, “By Allah, I will not get up to him, and I will not praise anyone but Allah.” Allah sent down: “Indeed, those who came with the slander…” the whole verses. When Allah sent down this about my innocence, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, who was supporting Mistah b. Uthatha because of his kinship, said, “By Allah, I will never spend anything on Mistah after what he said about Aisha.” Then Allah sent down this verse: “And let not those of virtue among you…” to the end of the verse. Abu Bakr said, “Yes, I love that Allah should forgive me.” So he restored to Mistah the support he used to give him. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Zaynab bt. Jahsh about my matter. He said, “O Zaynab, what do you know and what have you seen?” She said, “I protect my hearing and my sight. By Allah, I know nothing but good about her.” Aisha said: She was the one who rivaled me, and Allah protected her by her piety.
