He said: Each of them narrated to me a portion of the hadith that Aisha ؓ narrated, and some of their hadith confirms the others, though some were more retentive than others. They claimed that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to go out on an expedition, he would draw lots among his wives, and whichever of them came out in the lot, he would take her with him. Aisha said: He drew lots among us for an expedition he undertook, and my lot came out, so I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after Allah had revealed the hijab. I would descend and be carried in my howdah. We traveled until, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished that expedition and we approached Madinah returning, he announced departure one night. I got up when he announced departure to relieve myself. When I had finished my business, I came back to my baggage and found that a necklace of mine made of onyx beads had broken. So I went back searching for my necklace. The group that was loading the camels came and carried my howdah and placed it on my camel that I used to ride, thinking I was inside. At that time women were light; they had not become heavy with flesh, and they ate only small amounts of food. So the people did not notice the lightness of the howdah. I was a young girl. They sent the camel off and departed. I found my necklace after the army had moved on, and I came to their campsite, but there was no one there to call or answer. So I went to the place where I had been and thought that they would miss me and come back to me. While I was sitting at my place, sleep overcame me and I fell asleep. Safwan b. al-Mu‘attal al-Sulami, then al-Dhakwani, was behind the army. He set out early at night and reached my place in the morning. He saw the dark shape of a sleeping person and came to me. He recognized me when he saw me, as he used to see me before the hijab. I woke up when he uttered the words of recovery upon recognizing me, and I covered my face with my jilbab. He did not speak a word to me, and I did not hear a word from him except his utterance of recovery, until he made his mount kneel and stepped on its foreleg, and I mounted it. He led me on the mount until we reached the army after they had halted. Then those who were destroyed were destroyed. The one who assumed the greater part of the slander was Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul. We arrived in Madinah, and I fell ill for a month after arriving while the people were spreading the words of the slanderers. I was unaware of any of that, but it troubled me in my illness that I did not recognize from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the kindness I used to see from him when I was sick. He would only enter upon me, say, “How is this one?” and then leave. That troubled me, and I was unaware of the evil until I went out after I recovered. Umm Mistah went out with me toward al-Manasi‘, which was our place for relieving ourselves. We would not go out except from night to night, and that was before privies were made near our houses. Our practice was the practice of the early Arabs in going out to the open desert for relieving ourselves. We were bothered by having privies near our houses. So I set out with Umm Mistah, who was the daughter of Abu Ruhm b. al-Muttalib b. Abd Manaf, and her mother was the daughter of Sakhr b. Amir, the grandmother of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and her son was Mistah b. Uthatha b. al-Muttalib. I and Umm Mistah headed back to my house after we had finished our business. Umm Mistah tripped over her long outer garment and said, “May Mistah perish.” I said to her, “How bad what you said! Do you revile a man who witnessed Badr?” She said, “O you, have you not heard what he said?” I said, “What did he say?” Then she told me the words of the slanderers. I became more ill in addition to my illness. When we returned to my house, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us, greeted, and said, “How is this one?” I said to him, “Will you permit me to go to my parents?” At that time I wanted to confirm the news from them. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted me, so I went to my parents and said to my mother, “O mother, what are the people talking about?” She said, “O daughter, take it lightly. By Allah, rarely is there a beautiful woman loved by a man who has co-wives except that they say much against her.” I said, “Glory be to Allah! The people have been talking about this?” I spent that night until morning with tears not ceasing and no sleep soothing my eyes. She said: Then I woke up crying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ali b. Abi Talib and Usama b. Zayd when the revelation was delayed, and he consulted them about separating from his wife. As for Usama, he advised the Messenger of Allah ﷺ based on what he knew of his wife’s innocence and the affection he felt for them. Usama said, “O Messenger of Allah, she is your wife, and we know nothing but good of her.” As for Ali, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has not restricted you; there are many women besides her. Ask the servant girl, and she will tell you the truth.” She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Barira and said to her, “O Barira, have you seen anything that makes you suspicious?” Barira said, “By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not seen anything about her that I would hold against her, except that she is a young girl who sleeps off from the dough of her family, and a domestic animal comes and eats it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood that day and sought excuse against Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul. He said while on the pulpit, “O assembly of Muslims, who will excuse me from a man whose harm has reached me concerning my household? By Allah, I know nothing but good about my household, and they have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he used to enter upon my family only with me.” She said: Sa‘d b. Mu‘adh al-Ansari stood and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, I will strike his neck; and if he is from our brothers the Khazraj, command us and we will do your command.” Sa‘d b. Ubada stood up, who was the chief of the Khazraj that day. Before that he had been a righteous man, but zeal carried him away, and he said to Sa‘d b. Mu‘adh, “You lie! By the life of Allah, you will not kill him, nor can you.” Usayd b. Hudayr stood up, who was the cousin of Sa‘d b. Mu‘adh, and said to Sa‘d b. Ubada, “You lie! By the life of Allah, he will kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites.” The two tribes, Aws and Khazraj, rose up until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was calming them until they became silent, and he became silent. She said: I spent that day with tears not ceasing and no sleep soothing my eyes. My parents came to me in the morning, and I had wept through my night, with no sleep and tears not ceasing, and they thought that weeping would split my liver. While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, a woman from the Ansar asked permission to enter, and I permitted her. She sat weeping with me. While we were like that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and sat down. He had not sat with me since the accusation was made. He had stayed a month without receiving revelation concerning my matter. He testified and then said, “To proceed, O Aisha, it has reached me about you such and such. If you are innocent, Allah will soon prove your innocence; but if you have committed a sin, seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant confesses his sin and then repents, Allah turns to him.” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his speech, my tears stopped until I could not feel a drop. I said to my father, “Respond to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what he said.” He said, “By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I said to my mother, “Respond to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what he said.” She said, “By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah.” I said, while I was a young girl who did not read much of the Quran, “By Allah, I know that you have heard this talk until it settled in your hearts and you believed it. So if I tell you that I am innocent, and Allah knows I am innocent, you will not believe me. And if I confess to you something, and Allah knows I am innocent of it, you will believe me. By Allah, I find no example for me and you except the father of Yusuf when he said: ‘So patience is most fitting, and Allah is the One sought for help.’” Then I turned and lay on my bed. By Allah, at that time I knew that I was innocent and that Allah would prove my innocence, but by Allah, I did not think that Allah would send down revelation concerning me that would be recited, for my matter was too insignificant in my view for Allah to speak about me with a recited command. But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would see a dream in his sleep by which Allah would prove my innocence. She said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not leave his place, and no one from the household went out, until Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down revelation upon him. He was seized by what used to seize him of the intense condition, until sweat like pearls poured from him even on a cold day, due to the weight of the Quran being revealed to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was relieved, he was laughing. The first word he spoke was, “As for Allah, He has declared you innocent.” My mother said, “Get up to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I said, “By Allah, I will not get up to him, and I will not praise anyone but Allah.” Allah, Mighty is His mention, sent down: “Indeed, those who came with the slander…” the whole ten verses. When Allah sent down this about my innocence, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, who was supporting Mistah b. Uthatha because of his kinship and poverty, said, “By Allah, I will never spend anything on Mistah after what he said about Aisha.” Then Allah sent down: “And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give to the near of kin, the needy, and the emigrants in the way of Allah. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” Abu Bakr said, “Yes, by Allah, I love that Allah should forgive me.” So he restored to Mistah the support he used to give him and said, “By Allah, I will never take it away from him.” Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Zaynab bt. Jahsh, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, about my matter. He said, “O Zaynab, what do you know or what have you seen?” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, I protect my hearing and my sight. By Allah, I know nothing but good.” Aisha said: She was the one who rivaled me among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah protected her by her piety. Her sister Hamna began to fight on her behalf, and she perished among those who perished among the people of the slander. Al-Zuhri said: This is what has reached us of the account of these people from the hadith of Aisha.
