✧ The Marriage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Khadijah, Her Age, Her Death, and Some of Her Stories

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدَوسِ بْنِ كَامِلٍ السَّرَّاجُ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْأُمَوِيُّ ثنا أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتْ خَدِيجَةُ قَالَتْ

خَوْلَةُ بِنْتُ حَكِيمِ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ الْأَوْقَصِ امْرَأَةُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ وَذَلِكَ بِمَكَّةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَلَا تَزَوَّجُ؟ قَالَ «مَنْ؟» قَالَتْ إِنْ شِئْتَ بِكْرًا وَإِنْ شِئْتَ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ «فَمَنِ الْبِكْرُ؟» قَالَتْ ابْنَةُ أَحَبِّ خَلْقِ اللهِ إِلَيْكَ عَائِشَةُ بِنْتُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَ «وَمَنِ الثَّيِّبُ؟» قَالَتْ سَوْدَةُ بِنْتُ زَمْعَةَ آمَنَتْ بِكَ وَاتَّبَعَتْكَ عَلَى مَا أَنْتَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ «فَاذْهَبِي فَاذْكُرِيهِمَا عَلَيَّ» فَجَاءَتْ فَدَخَلَتْ بَيْتَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَوَجَدَتْ أُمَّ رُومَانَ أُمَّ عَائِشَةَ فَقَالَتْ يَا أُمَّ رُومَانَ مَاذَا أَدْخَلَ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ وَالْبَرَكَةِ؟ أَرْسَلَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْطِبُ عَلَيْهِ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ وَدِدْتُ انْتَظِرِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهُ آتٍ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَتْ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَاذَا أَدْخَلَ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ وَالْبَرَكَةِ؟ أَرْسَلَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْطِبُ عَلَيْهِ عَائِشَةَ قَالَ هَلْ تَصْلُحُ لَهُ وَإِنَّمَا هِيَ بِنْتُ أَخِيهِ فَرَجَّعَنِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ ارْجِعِي إِلَيْهِ فَقُولِي لَهُ أَنْتَ أَخِي فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَأَنَا أَخُوكَ وَابْنَتُكَ تَصْلُحُ لِي فَأَتَتْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لِخَوْلَةَ ادْعِي لِي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ فَأَنْكَحَهُ وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ ابْنَةُ سِتِّ سِنِينَ

✧ Khawlah bt. Hakim b. Umayyah b. al-Awqas, the wife of Uthman b. Maz'un, and that was in Makkah: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not marry?" He said, "Whom?" She said, "If you wish, a virgin, and if you wish, a previously married woman." He said, "Who is the virgin?" She said, "The daughter of the most beloved of Allah's creation to you, Aishah bt. Abi Bakr." He said, "And who is the previously married woman?" She said, "Sawdah bt. Zam'ah; she has believed in you and followed you in what you are upon." He said, "Go and mention them both to me." So she came and entered the house of Abu Bakr and found Umm Ruman, the mother of Aishah, and said, "O Umm Ruman, what good and blessing has Allah brought upon you! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to seek Aishah's hand for him." She said, "I wish you would wait for Abu Bakr, for he is coming." So Abu Bakr came and she said, "O Abu Bakr, what good and blessing has Allah brought upon you! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to seek Aishah's hand for him." He said, "Is she suitable for him when she is only the daughter of his brother?" So he sent me back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I mentioned that to him. He said, "Go back to him and say to him: You are my brother in Islam and I am your brother, and your daughter is suitable for me." So she went to Abu Bakr, and he said to Khawlah, "Call the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for me." He came, and he gave her in marriage to him. On that day I was a girl of six years."
