حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُمَرَ اللَّيْثِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ كُلْثُومِ بْنِ جَبْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي قَالَ

كُنَّا عِنْدَ عَنْبَسَةَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ فَرَكِبْتُ يَوْمًا إِلَى الْحَجَّاجِ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو غَادِيَةَ الْجُهَنِيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ قُومُوا إِلَيْهِ فَأَنْزَلُوهُ فَقُولُوا الْآنَ تَرْجِعُ فَخَرَجْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ الْآنَ تَرْجِعُ فَنَزَلَ فَدَخَلَ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى فَاسْتَسْقَى فَأُتِيَ بِمَاءٍ فِي قَدَحِ زُجَاجٍ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَشْرَبَ فِي الزُّجَاجِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِهِ فِي قَدَحِ نُضَارٍ فَشَرِبَ فَقَالَ بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَرُدُّ عَلَى أَهْلِي الْمَالَ فَقَالَ رَاشِدُ بْنُ أَبْيَضَ وَكَانَ مَعِي عِنْدَ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى أَبِيَمِينِكَ هَذِهِ؟ فَانْتَهَرَهُ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى وَقَالَ اقْتَسَمَا لَهُ قَالَ وَشَهِدْتُ خُطْبَتَهُ يَوْمَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ» حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ أُحِيطَ بِعُثْمَانَ سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «أَلَا لَا تَقْتُلْ هَذَا؟» فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَمَّارٌ فَلَوْلَا مَنْ كَانَ خَلْفَهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ لَوَطَّنْتُ بَطْنَهُ فَقُلْتُ اللهُمَّ إِنْ تَشَأْ أَنْ يُلْقِينِيهِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ صِفِّينَ إِذَا أَنَا بِرَجُلِ شَرٍّ يَقُودُ كَتِيبَةً رَاجِلًا فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى الدِّرْعِ فَانْكَسَفَ عَنْ رُكْبَتِهِ فَأَطْعُنُهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَمَّارٌ

✧ We were with Anbasah b. Sa'id. One day I rode to al-Hajjaj, and a man called Abu Ghadiyah al-Juhani came to him. Abd al-A'la b. Abd Allah said, 'Get up to him and bring him down, and say: Now you will return.' So we went out to him and said, 'Now you will return.' He dismounted. Abd al-A'la entered and asked for water. He was brought water in a glass cup, but he refused to drink from glass. Then he was brought it in a cup of naddar wood, and he drank. He said: 'I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ while I was returning wealth to my family.' Rashid b. Abyad, who was with me at Abd al-A'la's, said, 'With this right hand of yours?' Abd al-A'la rebuked him and said, 'Divide it for him.' He said: 'And I witnessed his sermon on the day of al-Aqabah, while he was saying: "Indeed your blood and your wealth are forbidden to you like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Indeed, do not return after me to disbelief, striking one another's necks." Then, when the day came that Uthman was besieged, I heard a man saying, "Indeed, will you not kill this one?" I looked at him, and behold, it was Ammar. Had it not been for those behind him from his companions, I would have pinned his belly to the ground. I said, "O God, if You will, let me meet him." Then when the day of Siffin came, I saw a man of evil leading a battalion on foot. I looked at the armor, and it had slipped from his knee, and I thrust him, and behold, it was Ammar.'
