حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي الْهِقْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الصَّدَفِيُّ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي نَمْلَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَبَا نَمْلَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ بَيْنَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ هَلْ تَكَلَّمُ هَذِهِ الْجَنَازَةُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُ أَعْلَمُ» فَقَالَ الْيَهُودِيُّ أَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنَّهَا تَكَلَّمُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا حَدَّثَكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَلَا تُصَدِّقُوهُمْ وَلَا تُكَذِّبُوهُمْ وَقُولُوا آمَنَّا بِاللهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ فَإِنْ كَانَ حَقًّا لَمْ تُكَذِّبُوهُمْ وَإِنْ كَانَ بَاطِلًا لَمْ تُصَدِّقُوهُمْ»

Translation

✧ He informed him that while he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man from the Jews came and said, "O Muhammad, does this funeral speak?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah knows best." The Jew said, "I bear witness that it speaks." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What people of the scripture tell you, neither believe nor disbelieve them. Rather, say, 'We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims in submission to Him.' If it is true, then you have not disbelieved them, and if it is false, then you have not believed them."
