حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي الطَّاهِرِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا أَبِي ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ ثَعْلَبٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُنْذِرِ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ فُلَانًا هَلَكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ إِنَّهُ فَاجِرٌ فَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَلَمْ تَرَ اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي صُحِبْتَ فِيهَا فِي الْحَرَسِ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ فِيهِمْ؟ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَبِعَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءَ قَبْرَهُ قَعَدَ حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْهُ حَثَى عَلَيْهِ ثَلَاثَ حَثَيَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يُثْنِي عَلَيْكَ النَّاسُ شَرًّا وَأُثْنِي عَلَيْكَ خَيْرًا» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ وَمَا ذَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «دَعْنَا مِنْكَ يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مَنْ جَاهَدَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ»

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of God, so-and-so has died, so pray over him.” Umar said: “He was a transgressor, so do not pray over him.” The man said: “O Messenger of God, do you not recall the night in which you were accompanied on guard duty? For he was among them.” The Messenger of God ﷺ stood and prayed over him, then followed until he came to his grave, and sat until he was done with him. Then he threw three handfuls of earth over him and said: “The people praise you with evil, but I praise you with good.” Umar said: “And what is that, O Messenger of God?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Leave us be, O Ibn al-Khattab. Whoever strives in the path of God, Paradise is assured for him.”
