✧ I came to Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani and said, 'O Abu Tha'laba, what do you do about this verse?' He said, 'Which verse?' I said, 'His saying: {O you who believe, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.}' He said, 'By Allah, you have asked one who knows about it. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said, "Rather, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, until you see miserliness obeyed, passion followed, the world preferred, and each person impressed with his own opinion. Then keep to your own self and leave alone the affairs of the common people. For behind you are days of patience, in which the one who is patient is like one grasping a live coal. The one who works good in that time will have the reward of fifty men."' Someone other than 'Utbah b. Abi Hakim added to me: It was said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty men among us or among them?' He said, 'No, rather the reward of fifty men among you.'
