حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ زَبْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُسْلِمَ بْنَ مِشْكَمٍ يَقُولُ

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيَّ يَقُولُ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي بِمَا يَحِلُّ لِي وَمَا يَحْرُمُ عَلَيَّ فَصَعَّدَ فِيَّ الْبَصَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ وَقَالَ «الْبِرُّ مَا سَكَنَتْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا لَمْ تَسْكُنْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ وَلَمْ يَطْمَئِنْ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ»

✧ I heard Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani say: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, inform me of what is lawful for me and what is forbidden to me.' He raised his gaze toward me and then lowered it, and said, 'Righteousness is what the soul feels at ease with and the heart feels assured about, and sin is what the soul does not feel at ease with and the heart does not feel assured about.'
