✧ I was present with the Messenger of God ﷺ when a vessel containing water was brought to him. He poured water over his right hand three times, then dipped his right hand into the vessel and poured from it over his left hand three times. Then he dipped his right hand into the water, scooped a handful, and with it rinsed his mouth, sniffed water into his nose, and blew it out three times. Then he inserted both palms into the vessel, carried water with them, and washed his face three times, combed his beard with his fingers, and wiped the inner parts of his ears. Then he inserted his little finger into the inside of his ear to make the water reach. Then he wiped his neck and the inner part of his beard with the leftover water from his face. He washed his right forearm three times, including beyond the elbow, and washed the left similarly with the right, exceeding the elbow. Then he wiped his head three times and wiped the outer parts of his ears, and wiped his neck and the inner part of his beard with the leftover water from his head. Then he washed his right foot three times, passed his fingers between its toes, made the water go beyond the ankle, and raised the water up the shin. Then he did the same with the left. Then he took a handful of water with his right hand and placed it on his head so that it trickled down the sides of his head, and he said: “This is the complete ablution.” Then he entered his prayer niche, and the people formed rows behind him. He looked to his right and his left, then raised his hands for the takbīr until they reached the level of his earlobes. Then he placed his right hand over his left on his chest. Then he recited the Fātiḥa aloud until he finished it, then he said Āmīn aloud upon finishing the recitation of the Fātiḥa, so that those behind him heard it. Then he recited another sūra along with the Fātiḥa. Then he raised his hands for the takbīr until they reached the level of his earlobes, then he bent into rukūʿ, placed his palms on his knees, spread his fingers, and took his time in rukūʿ until his bowing was balanced and became perfectly still, as if they were a flowing river; if a full cup were placed on it, it would not spill. Then he raised his head with humility and raised his hands until they reached the level of his earlobes and said: “God hears the one who praises Him.” Then he stood upright and paused until every bone returned to its place. Then he went down with the takbīr into prostration, pressing his forehead and nose on the ground until the mark of his nose was visible in the sand, and he spread his forearms and placed his head between them. Then he raised his head with the takbīr and sat briefly, resting on his left thigh and standing his right foot upright, fixing the toes of both. Then he went down into prostration similarly. Then he raised his head with the takbīr. Then he did likewise throughout the entire prayer until four rakʿas were completed. Then he sat for the tashahhud, placed his right palm on his right knee, lowered his thigh, and made a circle with his finger, supplicating with it beneath his garment. That was in winter, and his companions behind him had their hands in their clothes, doing this. He performed supererogatory prayer, then gave salutation to his right until the whiteness of his right cheek was seen, then gave salutation to his left until the whiteness of his left cheek was seen.
