حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثَنَا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ ثَنَا مُبَارَكُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ ثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ حَيَّةَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمْ بَنْدَادْقَانِ الْعِلْجُ أَنْ أَرْسِلُوا يَا مَعْشَرَ الْعَرَبِ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ نُكَلِّمْهُ فَاخْتَارَ النَّاسُ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ
أَبِي فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ طَوِيلَ الشَّعْرِ أَعْوَرَ فَأَتَاهُ فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ إِلَيْنَا سَأَلْنَاهُ مَا قَالَ لَهُ؟ فَقَالَ لَمَّا حَمِدْتُ اللهَ وَأَثْنَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَقُلْتُ «إِنْ كُنَّا لَأَبْعَدَ النَّاسِ دَارًا وَأَشَدَّ النَّاسِ جُوعًا وَأَعْظَمَ النَّاسِ شَقَاءً وَأَبْعَدَ النَّاسِ مِنْ كُلِّ خَيْرٍ حَتَّى بَعَثَ اللهُ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًا فَوَعَدَنَا النَّصْرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْجَنَّةَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ فَلَمْ نَزَلْ نَعْرِفُ مِنْ رَبِّنَا مُنْذُ جَاءَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْفَلَاحَ وَالنَّصْرَ حَتَّى أَتَيْنَاكُمْ»

✧ My father- it is as if I can see him, long-haired and one-eyed- came to him. When he returned to us, we asked him: What did he say to him? He said: When I praised Allah and extolled Him, I said: 'We were the farthest of people in abode, the most severe of people in hunger, the greatest of people in misery, and the farthest of people from every good, until Allah sent to us a Messenger who promised us victory in this world and Paradise in the Hereafter. We have not ceased to recognize from our Lord, since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, success and victory, until we came to you.'
