✧ When the pilgrimage season came, a group of the Ansar from Banu Malik b. al-Najjar performed Hajj, among them Mu'adh b. 'Afra' and As'ad b. Zurara, and from Banu Zurayq Rafi' b. Malik and Dhakwan b. 'Abd Qays, and from Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal Abu al-Haytham b. al-Tayhan, and from Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf 'Uwaym b. Sa'ida. The Messenger of God ﷺ came to them and told them the news of what God had chosen for him of prophethood and honor, and he recited the Quran to them. When they heard his words, they listened and their souls were at peace with his call. They recognized what they used to hear from the People of the Book of their mention of him by his description and what he called them to, so they believed him and had faith in him, and they were among the means of good.” Then they said to him, “You have known what is between the Aws and the Khazraj of bloodshed. We love what God has guided to and commanded you with, and we are for God and for you striving. We advise you to do as you see fit. Stay, in the name of God, until we return to our people and tell them of your affair and call them to God and His Messenger. Perhaps God will make peace between us and unite our affair, for today we are distant from one another and hateful to one another. If you come to us today while we have not reconciled, we will have no unified support for you. But we will appoint for you the next year's pilgrimage season.” The Messenger of God ﷺ was pleased with what they said. So they returned to their people and called them secretly, and told them about the Messenger of God ﷺ and what God had sent him with, and what he called to with the Quran, until there remained hardly a house among the houses of the Ansar but some people had embraced Islam in it without fail. Then they sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ: “Send us a man from your side to call the people with the Book of God, for that is more like to be followed.” The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Mus'ab b. 'Umayr, the brother of Banu 'Abd al-Dar, to them. He stayed among Banu Ghanm with As'ad b. Zurara, calling people secretly. Islam spread and its people increased, while they kept their calling hidden. Then As'ad b. Zurara and Mus'ab b. 'Umayr set out until they came to the well of Murri—or near it—and sat there. They sent for a group of the people of the land, and they came to them in secret. While Mus'ab b. 'Umayr was talking to them and reciting the Quran to them, Sa'd b. Mu'adh was informed about them. He came to them in his protective gear, carrying a spear, until he stood over them and said, “Why do you come to us in our homes with this solitary, unique, abandoned stranger, making fools of our weak ones with falsehood and calling them to it? I do not want to see you after this in anything of our protection.” So they went back. Then they returned a second time to the well of Murri—or near it. Sa'd b. Mu'adh was informed of them a second time, and he threatened them with a lesser threat than the first. When As'ad saw some softness in him, he said, “O son of my maternal aunt, listen to his words. If you hear something objectionable, reject it from him; and if you hear something good, respond to it.” He said, “What does he say?” Mus'ab b. 'Umayr recited to them: “Ha Mim. By the clear Book, indeed We have made it an Arabic Quran that you may understand.” Sa'd b. Mu'adh said, “I hear nothing but what I recognize.” He went back, and God had guided him, but he did not show Islam to them until he returned to his people. He called Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal to Islam and made his Islam public, saying, “Whoever doubts it, whether young or old, male or female, let him bring us something more guided than it and we will take it. By God, a matter has come in which necks will be struck.” Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal accepted Islam upon Sa'd's conversion and his call, except for those not mentioned. It was the first house among the houses of the Ansar to accept Islam entirely. Then Banu al-Najjar expelled Mus'ab b. 'Umayr and were harsh on As'ad b. Zurara. Mus'ab b. 'Umayr moved to Sa'd b. Mu'adh and remained with him, calling people and God guiding through his hands, until there remained hardly a house among the houses of the Ansar but some people had embraced Islam in it without fail. Their nobles accepted Islam, and 'Amr b. al-Jamuh accepted Islam, and their idols were broken. The Muslims became the most honored of its people, and their affair became sound. Mus'ab b. 'Umayr returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and was called “the reciter.”
