حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ يَعِيشَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَعْلَى عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ عَنْ مَثْعَبٍ قَالَ
كَانَ غَزْوٌ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا وَلَهُ رَاحِلَتُهُ يَعْتَقِبُ عَلَيْهَا غَيْرِي قَالَ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْزِلُ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ لِي «ارْكَبْ» فَأَقُولُ إِنَّ بِي قُوَّةً حَتَّى يَفْعَلَ ذَلِكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا فَيَقُولُ «مَا أَنْتَ إِلَّا مَثْعَبٌ» قَالَ «فَكَانَ مِنْ أَحَبِّ أَسْمَائِي إِلَيَّ»

✧ There was a military expedition with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and none of them had a mount except he would alternate riding it, apart from me. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ would dismount and then say to me, “Ride.” I would say, “I have strength,” until he did that two or three times, then he would say, “You are nothing but a water channel.” He said: “It became one of the names dearest to me.”
