حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ
اجْتَمَعَ بَنُو عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالُوا أَلَا تَسْأَلُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَجْعَلْ فِيكُمْ مَا جَعَلَ فِي بَنِي فُلَانٍ يَجْعَلْ فِيكُمُ السِّعَايَةَ؟ فَلَقُوا عَلِيًّا فَكَلَّمُوهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ أَبَى ذَلِكَ لَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ لَكُمْ أَوْسَاخَ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ أَوْ قَالَ غُسَالَةَ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ قَالَ عَبْدُ الْمُطَّلِبِ لِأَبِيهِ أَرْسِلْنِي فَأَرْسَلَ الْعَبَّاسُ ابْنَهُ الْفَضْلَ فَأَتَيْنَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَدَخَلْنَا فَخَصَّ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا تُصَرِّرَانِ هَهُنَا؟» فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثَنَا قَوْمُكَ وَبَنُو عَمِّكَ لِتَجْعَلَ فِيهِمْ مَا جَعَلْتَ فِي النَّاسِ مِنَ السِّعَايَةِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ» اللهَ أَبَى ذَلِكَ لَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ أَنْ تَأْكُلُوا أَوْسَاخَ أَوْ قَالَ غُسَالَةَ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ

✧ The Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib gathered and said: Will you not ask the Messenger of God ﷺ to assign to you what he assigned to the Banu So-and-so — to assign to you the collection of the poor-due? They met 'Ali and spoke to him, and he said: God ﷻ and His Messenger have refused that for you — that He should assign to you the filth of people's hands, or he said: the washings of people's hands. 'Abd al-Muttalib said to his father: Send me. So al-'Abbas sent his son al-Fadl. We came to the Prophet ﷺ and entered, and he gave each one of us special attention. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "What are you two doing here?" I said: O Messenger of God, your people and the sons of your paternal uncle have sent us so that you assign to them what you have assigned to the people of the poor-due. He said: God and His Messenger have refused for you that you should eat the filth, or he said: the washings of people's hands.
