حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مُبَارَكُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ زِيَادٍ أَتَى مَعْقِلَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ يَعُودُهُ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ تَجِدُكَ؟ قَالَ

مَعْقِلٌ مَا أُرَانِي لِمَا بِي وَسَأُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَمَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ اسْتُرْعِيَ رَعِيَّةً يَمُوتُ يَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَهُوَ غَاشٌّ لَهَا إِلَّا لَمْ يَجِدْ رِيحَ الْجَنَّةِ أَوْ قَالَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ قَالَ فَهَلَّا حَدَّثْتَنِي بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ قَبْلَ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ؟ قَالَ «لَوْلَا مَا بِي مَا حَدَّثْتُكَ»

Translation

✧ Ma'qil said: 'I do not think I will survive what I am in, but I will tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: 'And what is it?' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'There is no one who is placed in charge of a flock and dies on the day he dies while he is deceiving it but he will not find the scent of Paradise,' or he said: 'he will be from the people of the Fire.' He said: 'Would that you had told me this hadith before this day?' He said: 'Were it not for what I am in, I would not have told you.'
