حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْمُؤَدِّبُ قَالَا ثنا هَوْذَةُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ ثنا عَوْفٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ مَرِضَ مَعْقِلُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ مَرَضًا ثَقُلَ فِيهِ فَأَتَاهُ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ يَعُودُهُ فَقَالَ

إِنِّي مُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنِ اسْتُرْعِيَ رَعِيَّةً فَلَمْ يُحِطْهُمْ بِنَصِيحَةٍ لَمْ يَجِدْ رِيحَ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِنَّ رِيحَهَا لَيُوجَدُ مِنْ مَسِيرََةِ مِائَةِ عَامٍ» فَقَالَ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ أَلَا كُنْتَ حَدَّثَتْنِي بِهَذَا قَبْلَ الْآنِ قَالَ «فَالْآنَ لَوْلَا الَّذِي أَنَا عَلَيْهِ لَمْ أُحَدِّثْكَ بِهِ»

✧ 'I will tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever is put in charge of a flock and does not surround them with sincere advice will not find the scent of Paradise, and indeed its scent can be detected from a distance of a hundred years' journey.' So Ibn Ziyad said: 'Would that you had told me this before now.' He said: 'Now, were it not for the state I am in, I would not have told you this.'
