حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَخِي عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بِلَالٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ ؓ قَالَ

«بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ وَلَيْسَ مَعَنَا زَادٌ إِلَّا مِزْوَدٌ مِنْ تَمْرٍ وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْنَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ وَكَانَ يُعْطِينَا حَفْنَةً تَمْرٍ حَتَّى نَغْدُوَ وَكَانَ يُعْطِينَا تَمْرَةً تَمْرَةً فَضَرَبَ الْبَحْرَ بِدَابَّةٍ فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهَا ثُمَّ إِنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ أَمَرَ بِالضِّلْعِ فَحَنَى ثُمَّ أَمَرَ رَجُلًا فَرَكِبَ بَعِيرًا فَمَرَّ رَاكِبًا عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on an expedition, and we had no food except a leather bag of dates. He appointed Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah over us, and he would give each of us a handful of dates, until we ran out, and he would give us one date at a time. Then the sea cast up a creature and we ate from it. Abu Ubaydah ordered its rib and it was bent, then he ordered a man who mounted a camel, and the rider passed on the camel.
