حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَابْلُتِّيُّ ثنا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَنِي هِلَالُ بْنُ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالَ
انْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى غُنَيْمَةٍ تَرْعَاهَا جَارِيَةٌ لِي فِي قِبَلِ أُحُدٍ وَالْجَوَّانِيَّةِ فَوَجَدْتُ الذِّئْبَ قَدْ أَصَابَ مِنْهَا شَاةً وَأَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ آسَفُ كَمَا يَأْسَفُونَ فَصَكَكْتُهَا صَكَّةً ثُمَّ انْصَرَفْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَعَظَّمَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيَّ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَفَلَا أُعْتِقُهَا؟ قَالَ «بَلَى ائْتِنِي بِهَا» فَجِئْتُ بِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ اللهُ؟» فَقَالَتِ اللهُ ﷻ فِي السَّمَاءِ قَالَ «فَمَنْ أَنَا؟» قَالَتْ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ فَأَعْتِقْهَا»

✧ I set out to a small flock of sheep that a slave girl of mine was tending in the direction of Uhud and al-Jawwaniyya, and I found that a wolf had taken one of its sheep. I am a man from the children of Adam, and I get angry as they get angry, so I struck her a blow. Then I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him, and he made that seem grave to me. I said: O Messenger of God, should I not free her? He said: "Yes, bring her to me." So I brought her to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: "Where is God?" She said: 'God ﷻ is in heaven.' He said: "Who am I?" She said: 'You are the Messenger of God ﷺ.' He said: "Free her, for she is a believer."
