حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَمِّي ثنا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَنَّ حُمَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ
أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ لِلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ» وَهُوَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ «فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»

✧ He informed him that he heard Muʿāwiyah while he was delivering a sermon to the people on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, saying: "O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'This is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ. Its fasting has not been prescribed for you, but I am fasting.'" And he was saying that: "Whoever among you wishes to fast it, let him fast, and whoever wishes to break his fast, let him break his fast."
