حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ قَالَا ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ» يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ

Translation

✧ Al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us; they said: Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: Muʿāwiyah came to Madinah and said: "Where are your scholars? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on this day," and he said: "I am fasting, so whoever wishes, let him fast, and whoever wishes, let him break his fast"—meaning the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ.
