✧ Muʿāwiya set out from Syria intending Makkah and stopped at a place between Makkah and Madinah called al-Abwāʾ. He looked into an ancient well and was struck by facial paralysis. He hastened his journey until he arrived in Makkah. The chamberlain came to him and said, “O Commander of the Faithful, the people are at the door; I do not miss any face.” He said, “Then spread out for me, then.” Then he called for a turban, wrapped it around his head, and split it over his face. Then he went out, praised God and extolled Him, and then said: “To proceed: If I am granted health, then indeed the righteous before me were granted health, and I would not wish to conceal that I hope to be among them. If one of my limbs has become ill, I cannot count my healthy ones. If some of your elite have found fault with me, I have been at war against your common people. I have no desire to wish from God more than what He has given me. May God have mercy on a man who prays for my well-being.” The voices rose with supplication and he was moved to tears. Marwān said to him, “What makes you weep, O Commander of the Faithful?” He said, “I recalled what I had turned away from: my age has advanced, my bones have become thin, tears have increased in my eyes, I have been struck in my best part and what appears of me. Were it not for my desire for Yazīd, I would have perceived my right course.”
