حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ قَالَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ الْجُمَحِيُّ مَالِكُ بْنُ عَوْفِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَرْبُوعِ بْنِ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ دَهْمَانَ بْنِ نَصْرِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ بَكْرِ بْنِ هَوَازِنَ قَالَ

ابْنُ سَلَّامٍ وَكَانَ مَالِكُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ النَّصْرِيُّ رَئِيسًا مِقْدَامًا كَانَ أَوَّلَ ذِكْرِهِ وَمَا شَهَرَ مِنْ بَلَائِهِ يَوْمُ الْفِجَارِ مَعَ قَوْمِهِ كَثُرَ صَنِيعُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَهُوَ عَلَى هَوَازِنَ حِينَ لَقِيَهُمْ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَسَاقَ مَعَ النَّاسِ أَمْوَالَهُمْ وَذَرَارِيَّهُمْ فَخَالَفَهُ دُرَيْدُ بْنُ الصِّمَّةِ فَلَجَّ وَأَبَى فَصَارُوا إِلَى أَمْرِهِ فَلَمْ يَحْمَدُوا رَأْيَهُ وَكَانَ يَوْمَئِذٍ رَئِيسَهُمْ فَلَمَّا رَأَى هَزِيمَةَ أَصْحَابِهِ قَصَدَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَكَانَ شَدِيدَ الْإِقْدَامِ لَيُصِيبَهُ زَعَمَ فَوَافَاهُ مَرْثَدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ فَقَتَلَهُ وَحَمَلَ فَرَسَهُ مَحَاجَ فَلَمْ يَقْدُمْ ثُمَّ أَرَادَهُ وَصَاحَ بِهِ فَلَمْ يَقْدُمْ فَقَالَ

✧ Ibn Sallam said: Malik b. Awf al-Nasri was a leader, a bold champion. The first mention of him and his notable valor was on the day of al-Fijar with his people. His deeds were many that day. He was in command of Hawazin when they met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he drove with the people their wealth and their children. Durayd b. al-Simmah opposed him, but he insisted and refused. They followed his command and did not approve of his opinion. He was their leader that day. When he saw the defeat of his companions, he headed for the Prophet ﷺ, being bold in attack, intending to strike him, as he claimed. Murthad b. Abi Murthad al-Ghanawi confronted him and killed him. He took his horse, Mahaj. He did not advance. Then he wanted him again and shouted at him, but he did not advance. He said:
