Chain of narrators
  1. Yūsuf al-Qāḍī
  2. Sulaymān b. Ḥarb
  3. Ḥammād b. Salamah
  4. al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭaʾah
  5. Muḥammad b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf from his father

✧ I saw Muhammad b. Maslamah al-Ansari look at the daughter of al-Dahhak, who was on a wall playing, and he kept looking at her. It was said to him, “Do you look at her while you are a companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ?” He said, “Indeed I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘When God casts into a person’s heart the desire to propose to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her.’” Hammad b. Salama narrated it thus and contradicted others in it. The narrators differed concerning al-Hajjaj b. Artah in this hadith. The correct version in my view, and God knows best, is what Hafs b. Ghiyath and Yazid b. Harun narrated from al-Hajjaj, from Muhammad b. Sulayman b. Abi Hathma, from his paternal uncle Sahl b. Abi Hathma, from Muhammad b. Maslamah.
