✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah on his return from al-Ṭāʾif, Bujayr b. Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā wrote to his brother Kaʿb b. Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā, informing him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had killed a man in Makkah who had been satirizing and harming him, and that the remaining poets of Quraysh, Ibn al-Zibaʿrā and Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb, had fled in every direction. He said: “If you have any need for yourself, then flee to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for he does not kill anyone who comes to him repentant. And if you do not do so, then save yourself by your own means.” Kaʿb had composed some verses in which he had attacked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the letter reached Kaʿb, the earth became constricted for him, and he feared for himself, and those of his enemies who were in his presence spread rumors about him. They said, “He will be killed.” When he found no way out, he composed his poem in which he praised the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned his fear and the rumors of the slanderers about him from the next day. Then he departed until he reached Madinah. He stayed with a man from Juhaynah with whom he was acquainted, as he mentioned to me. Then the man went with him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he had prayed the morning prayer. He prayed with the people, then he pointed out the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Prophet, to him and said, “This is the Messenger of Allah, so stand up to him and ask for his protection.” He mentioned to me that he stood up to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he placed his hand in his hand, and the Messenger of Allah did not know him. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, Kaʿb b. Zuhayr has come to seek your protection, repentant and Muslim. Will you accept from him if I bring him to you?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Yes.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, I am Kaʿb b. Zuhayr.” Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me, saying: A man from the Anṣār jumped at him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, let me deal with this enemy of Allah and strike his neck.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Leave him alone, for he has come repentant and remorseful.” He became angry with this clan of the Anṣār because of what their companion had done to him, and that is because he had not...
