حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ الرَّجَائِيُّ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْمَرٍ الْبَحْرَانِيُّ ثنا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ ثنا أَبُو عَمْرٍو السَّدُوسِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ أَخْبَرَنِي نُعْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ قَالَ

قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ إِذْ قَدِمْتُهَا وَأَنَا غَيْرُ مُسْلِمٍ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَأَقْدَمُ وَقَدْ أَصَابَنِي كَرًى شَدِيدٌ فَنِمْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى فَزِعْتُ بِقِرَاءَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ «وَالطُّورِ وَكِتَابٍ مَسْطُورٍ» فاسْتَرْجَعْتُ حَتَّى خَرَجْتُ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا دَخَلَ قَلْبِي الْإِسْلَامَ

✧ I came to Madinah — when I arrived there I was not yet a Muslim at that time — and I entered while I was overcome with severe drowsiness, so I slept in the mosque until I was startled by the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was reciting “By the Mount, and a Book inscribed” (Q 52:1–2). I kept repeating the istirjāʿ (saying “To Allah we belong and to Him we return”) until I left the mosque, and that was the first thing that entered my heart of Islam.
