حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا صَالِحُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الْخُوَارِزْمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ الْبَاجِيُّ سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَرْبِيِّ ثنا الْحَسَنُ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قَوْمِي فَقَالَ «وَاللهِ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ وَاللهِ مَا عِنْدِي مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ» مَرَّتَيْنِ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ثَلَاثَةُ أَحْمَالٍ مِنْ غُرِّ الذُّرَى فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْنَا فَحَمَلَنَا فَلَمَّا مَضَيْنَا بِهِ قُلْتُ لِأَصْحَابِي مَا أُرَاهُ يُبَارَكُ لَنَا فِيهَا وَقَدْ حَلَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ لَا يَحْمِلَنَا فَحَمَلَنَا فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَقَالَ «لَمْ أَنْسَ يَمِينِي وَلَكِنْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَيْتُ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَعَلْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَكَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي»

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him for mounts, along with a group from my people. He said, “By Allah, I will not give you mounts; by Allah, I have nothing to mount you on,” twice. Then the Prophet ﷺ received three loads from the white-topped camels, so he sent for us and mounted us. When we had gone on with it, I said to my companions, “I do not think we will be blessed in this, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ swore that he would not mount us, then he mounted us.” So we returned to him and told him about his oath. He said, “I did not forget my oath, but when I swear an oath and then see something better than it, I do what is better and expiate for my oath.”
