✧ We were on a journey with the Prophet ﷺ and traveled one night until, in the last part of the night just before dawn, we fell into that sleep—and no sleep is sweeter for a traveler. Nothing woke us but the heat of the sun. The first to wake was Bilal, then so-and-so and so-and-so (and he named them), then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept, no one would wake him until he woke on his own, because we did not know what might happen to him in his sleep. When ʿUmar woke and saw what had befallen the people—and he was a strong man—he said takbīr and raised his voice with takbīr, and kept saying takbīr and raising his voice until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke at his voice. The people complained to him about what had happened to them. He said, “No harm; move on.” So he departed and traveled a short distance, then stopped and called for water for ablution and performed ablution. Then the call to prayer was given, and he led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, there was a man who had kept apart and had not prayed with the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What prevented you, O so-and-so, from praying with the people?” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, I became junub and there is no water.” He said, “Use the earth, for it suffices you.” Then he traveled on, and the people complained to him of thirst. He stopped and called so-and-so—Abu Raja' named him—and called ʿAlī, and said to them, “Go and seek water.” They set off and met a woman between two waterskins—or two leather water bags—of water on a camel of hers. They went to her and said, “Where is the water?” She said, “My last contact with it was yesterday at this hour.” They said to her, “Then come with us.” She said, “To where?” They said, “To the Prophet ﷺ.” She said, “The one called the Ṣābi'?” They said, “The one you mean; come along.” So they brought her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the story. They made her dismount from her camel, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for a vessel and put in it the mouths of the two waterskins—or the two water bags—then rinsed his mouth and returned it to the vessel, then returned it to the mouths of the two waterskins—or the two water bags—then tied their mouths and released the spouts, and it was announced among the people: “Drink and fill your containers.” So whoever wished drank, and whoever wished filled his container. The last of that was that he gave to the one who had become junub and said, “Go and pour it over yourself.” She stood watching what was being done with her water. By Allah, he mounted her when he had finished, and it seemed to us that they were fuller than they had been before. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Collect for her from dates, barley meal, and flour,” until they collected food for her in a cloth, loaded her on her camel, and placed it in front of her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, “Know, by Allah, that we have not taken anything from your water; rather it is Allah who gave us to drink.” She came to her people after having been delayed from them, and they said, “O so-and-so, what delayed you?” She said, “The wonder: two men met me and took me to this one called the Ṣābi', and he did such-and-such. By Allah, he is either the greatest sorcerer between this and that, or he is truly the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” The Muslims used to raid the polytheists around her, but they would not touch the small group of camels near her. One day she said to her people, “By Allah, I think these people are calling us; would you accept Islam?” So they agreed with her, and they all entered Islam.
