حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ بَهْرَامَ الْأَيْذَجِيُّ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَرْزُوقٍ ثنا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ تَوْبَةَ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَوْفِ بْنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ عَرْسِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دَارِمٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَوْفِ بْنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ قَالَ
وَفْدَ أَبِي إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ غُلَيِّمٌ فَأَمَرَ لِكُلِّ رَجُلٍ بِبُرْدَيْنِ وَأَمَرَ لِي بِبُرْدٍ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفْنَا بَاعَ عَلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدَ بُرْدَيْهِ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي بُرْدَيْنِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيَّ وَقَالَ «مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكَ هَذَا؟» قُلْتُ اشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْ فُلَانٍ قَالَ «أَنْتَ كُنْتَ أَحَقَّ مِنْهُ إِذْ ضَيَّعَ مَا أَعْطَاهُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ»

✧ My father’s delegation came to the Prophet ﷺ while I was with him as a young boy. He ordered two cloaks for each man and ordered one cloak for me. When we departed, one of the men sold me one of his two cloaks, so I came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing two cloaks. He looked at me and said, “Where did you get this?” I said, “I bought them from so-and-so.” He said, “You were more entitled to it than he, since he squandered what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had given him.”
