حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ خِدَاشٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْمِصِّيصِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى الطَّبَّاعُ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ
عَرَّسَ بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَافْتَرَشَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا ذِرَاعَ رَاحِلَتِهِ وانْتَبَهْتُ بَعْضَ اللَّيْلِ فَإِذَا نَاقَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ لَيْسَ قُدَّامَهَا أَحَدٌ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَطْلُبُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ قَائِمَانِ فَقُلْتُ أَيْنَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَا مَا نَدْرِي غَيْرَ أَنَّا قَدْ سَمِعْنَا صَوْتًا بِأَعْلَى الْوَادِي قَالَ مِثْلَ هَزِيرِ الرَّحَى فَلَمْ يَلْبَثْ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى أَتَانَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ أَتَانِي آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ فَاخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ» فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ نُنَاشِدُكَ اللهَ وَالصُّحْبَةَ لَمَّا جَعَلْتَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّفَاعَةِ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِي فَانْطَلَقْنَا مَعًا نَسْتَبِقُ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَإِذَا النَّاسُ قَدْ فَزِعُوا وَفَقَدُوا نَبِيَّهُمْ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ أَتَانِي آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَالشَّفَاعَةِ فَاخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ نَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ وَالصُّحْبَةَ لَمَّا جَعَلْتَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِكَ فَلَمَّا أَضَبُّوا قَالَ «أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنَّ شَفَاعَتِي لِمَنْ مَاتَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ halted with us for rest one night, and each one of us spread out his forearm on his mount's forearm. I woke up part of the night, and there was the Prophet's she-camel with no one in front of it. I set out looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and found Muadh b. Jabal and Abdullah b. Qays standing. I said, 'Where is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' They said, 'We do not know, except that we heard a sound at the top of the valley,' like the sound of a millstone. It was not long before the Prophet ﷺ came to us and said: 'A messenger came to me from my Lord and gave me the choice between half of my nation entering Paradise and intercession, so I chose intercession.' We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we adjure you by Allah and by companionship to make us among the people of intercession.' He said, 'You are among the people of my intercession.' Then we went together racing to the people, and found the people alarmed and missing their Prophet. He said: 'A messenger came to me from my Lord and gave me the choice between half of my nation entering Paradise and intercession, so I chose intercession.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we adjure you by Allah and by companionship to make us among the people of your intercession.' When they gathered around him, he said: 'I call you to witness that my intercession is for whoever of my nation dies without associating anything with Allah.'
