✧ I heard ʿAwf b. Malik say: I stood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night, and he began by using the toothstick, then performed ablution, then stood and prayed. I stood with him. He began and opened the recitation from al-Baqarah; he did not pass by a verse of mercy without stopping and asking, nor pass by a verse of punishment without stopping and seeking refuge. Then he bowed and remained bowing for the length of his standing, saying in his bowing: “Glory be to the Possessor of might, dominion, pride, and greatness.” Then he recited Al ʿImran, then surah by surah, doing the same.
