حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْروِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ثنا أَبِي ثنا زُهَيْرٌ ثنا لَيْثٌ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ زَاذَانِ قَالَ
كُنْتُ مَعَ عَابِسٍ الْغِفَارِيِّ عَلَى ظَهْرِ أَجَارٍ بِالْبَصْرَةِ فَرَأَى النَّاسُ يَتَحَمَّلُونَ لِيَهْرَبُوا مِنَ الطَّاعُونِ فَقَالَ يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي إِلَيْكَ يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي إِلَيْكَ يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي إِلَيْكَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَمٍّ لَهُ قَدْ كَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ لِمَ يَتَمَنَّى الْمَوْتَ؟ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا يَتَمَنَّى أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ فَيَكُونَ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ انْقِطَاعُ أَجَلِهِ»

✧ I was with ʿĀbis al-Ghifārī on the roof of a house in Basra, and he saw people loading up to flee from the plague. He said, 'O plague, take me to you! O plague, take me to you! O plague, take me to you!' A cousin of his, who was a companion, said, 'Why does he wish for death? I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Let none of you wish for death, for at that point his term is cut off.'
