حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ وَبَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الدِّمْيَاطِيُّ قَالَا ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ
عَنْ عَابِسٍ الْغِفَارِيِّ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ عَلَى سَطْحٍ فَرَأَى النَّاسَ يَتَرَحَّلُونَ فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُ النَّاسِ؟ قَالُوا يَتَرَحَّلُونَ مِنَ الطَّاعُونِ قَالَ يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ أَخِيهِ يُتَمَنَّى الْمَوْتُ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ فَإِنَّهُ يَقْطَعُ الْعَمَلَ وَلَا يَرُدُّ الرَّجُلَ فَيُسْتَعْتَبُ؟»

✧ From ʿAbis al-Ghifari, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he was on a rooftop and saw the people departing. He asked: “What is the matter with the people?” They said: “They are departing because of the plague.” He said: “O plague, take me! O plague, take me! O plague, take me!” His nephew said to him: “Do you wish for death when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Do not wish for death, for it cuts off deeds and does not return a man so that he may be shown mercy’?”
